About Me, Miss T.
As a recent graduate from the University of New Hampshire's Elementary Education graduate program, I am so excited to start my time in the classroom! In the pursuit of my degrees (B.A. in English Teaching, M.Ed. in Elementary Education), I have had the privilege of teaching in kindergarten, 5th, and 6th grade classrooms, as well as substitute teaching at all elementary and high school grade levels. My time spent in the classroom is my time best spent! (But when I'm not in the classroom, I love spending my time with my family and friends, or painting, spending time outdoors, or reading a good book.)
Last year, I was lucky enough to find myself at Christ the King as the long-term substitute for the 3rd grade for the first 3 months of the year. Through what can only be described as an act of Divine Intervention, I ended up spending all except 2 weeks of the year being a long-term sub in 2 more classrooms! After spending 9 months in 3 grades, teaching over 50 students (that's about 20% of the CKS population in one year!), I was blessed to be offered the kindergarten teaching position. I truly feel that I was lead to CKS, and look forward to continuing my teaching journey at a school whose families, students, faculty, and staff made me feel like a valued mamber of the community from my very first day there. What a gift!
As for me and my classroom:
I love books! Because of this love, in my classroom, you will see lots of books and time dedicated to becoming thoughtful lovers of literature. I believe that literacy instruction is the foundation to education and allows students to access all other content areas with ease and interest. To me, there is no better teaching tool than a good book--they allow students to use their imaginations, see what 'good' authors and illustrators do, and learn infinite amounts of new information. I've been collecting books for my classroom library for several years now and I can't wait to put them into eager hands.
While I refer to the room as mine, the classroom is really a place that belongs very much to my students. It's a place where I hope they build some of their deepest friendships, ask their wildest questions, play their silliest games, and feel both challenged and capable on a regular basis. If you were to pop into my room at any given time, you would likely hear a buzz--conversations, hands-on activities, singing and dancing, and students dispersed throughout the room. A lot of my instruction is taught through centers, and I encourage students to work (especially on reading and writing) where they feel most comfortable, so you may see a lot of us sitting on the floor, working in small groups, and doing activities in one area that may be different than what is going on somewhere else.
Finally,
This blog is named very intentionally, as I believe that students have as much to offer and teach me (and each other!) as I could ever teach them. Teaching Miss Thompson documents my journey as a new teacher, and on it you will find the stories and happenings of day-to-day life in my classroom. Pictures of lessons and activities play a large role in what I post. Please feel free to comment on my posts and visit my other teaching resource sites...I look forward to everything this new blogging adventure will bring.
