It's all over the news and it's the #1 buzz topic around the school: the Pope has made his first official visit to the United States! It's a pretty big deal as far as advanced political concerns go, but it was also a really important thing for us to discuss with the students.
During religion this week, Mr. Ploof took a brief hiatus from our religion books and usual religious ed. curriculum. Everything we discussed revolved around discussions of Mass and the Pope himself. We spent a lot of time discussing the many important jobs that the Pope fulfills, mainly being that he is an example and teacher of Christ for everyone around the world. We discussed our responsibility to be examples of Christian Kindness, and thought of ways we could exemplify this every day at school, at home, and out in public.
There were also several times throughout the week that we watched the Pope on the live stream. During snack time on Tuesday, the Pope was at the White House with the President, giving a welcome address. It was the perfect opportunity for the kids to see two very influential people together and talk about the importance of it!

Finally, thanks to Mr. Hughes, we were even able to integrate the Pope into other subjects throughout the week. He had sent along a work packet for all of the teachers, including lots of Pope-centered discussion topics, activity pages, and worksheets. Our kiddos got to take advantage of a few handwriting sheets, coloring pages, and talking points.
It was a great week in room 202! We've also started our first unit of Science, reached our goal of 15 sustained minutes of silent/independent reading time, and finished our first chapter in math! More on all of that to come soon...
